village house
Sitting on a small and irregular block, Village House involves alterations and additions to a pre-war cottage, located in an inner western suburb of Brisbane that is significantly impacted in major flood events. Shifting and lifting the existing cottage unlocked the opportunity to include a modest extension to the left while also allowing for an enclosed garage, a rumpus, laundry, and an additional bedroom and bathroom downstairs. The extension has been deliberately set back at the side of the house, to celebrate the form and character of the existing cottage as much as possible.
Within the existing cottage, the clients were keen to retain as much of the essence of the Queenslander as possible and to modify only what was necessary. This resulted in a plan which closely resembles the original with the addition of a covered outdoor deck connected by the refreshed kitchen. A large window at the new staircase abutting the new and old maximises the southern light into the living areas and large sliding doors between the kitchen and outdoor deck allows for controlled ventilation throughout the year.
