fig house
Inspired by a 1960s modernist design, the proposed new dwelling seeks to be at one with the ground plane. Located on a site with a mature white fig tree and a steep fall towards the river on the south, the dwelling mimics that of the site in stepping down the hill towards the river; framing the view out towards the waterbody from the living room between the canopy of the fig and the ground plane. Mature trees along the west shade and protect the living spaces from the western sun while providing privacy from the road reserve.
The spatial planning attempts to capture a river view, garden view, or both from every room in the house. The ground floor accommodates a sunken lounge, kitchen, guest room, study, a garage and carport with enough space for 6 cars, along with ancillary spaces such as the laundry, storage, and a butler’s pantry. The upper level contains three bedrooms, a library, and an uncovered roof terrace – orientated around the circulation corridors, the double height living and dining space, and a covered internal courtyard garden.
