cornwall street affordable housing
Located on a small yet prominent site in Woolloongabba, this nine storey apartment building houses thirty-two units of much needed affordable rental accommodation for youth and key workers. The mix of studio and one-bedroom units are enhanced by extensive communal recreation spaces located within the most desirable orientation of each floor plate.
The building has three very public elevations which are impacted upon by significant traffic noise. This constraint has resulted in a building footprint designed to capture Brisbane’s subtropical climate and re-orientates private open space away from the noise source as much as possible and provides an opportunity for a landmark piece of public art facing the motorway. Each level including the roof top communal terrace contains extensive planting and also achieves excellent cross ventilation.
Cornwall Street Affordable Housing was awarded a commendation in the Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing category. The project also received a special commendation in the Lord Mayor’s Brisbane Buildings that Breathe Architecture Prize 2021.
